DR WILLIAM BROWN OBE RDI
Chartered Civil and Consulting Engineer and Designer
CRANES & TELESCOPES
At Freeman Fox & Partners, Dr William Brown applied his design and engineering expertise to the techniques of manufacturing and erecting of swing bridges, cranes and telescope mountings.
He introduced the effective use of plated jibs and body structures to cranes. His concepts for single box crane jibs, occasionally using warped forms, have been adapted worldwide. He devised standard overhead moving cranes of wide range lifting capacities and the welded-boom concept which allows slender modern mobile cranes to carry enormous loads. He designed the ship deck-mounted container transporter for Sea Container Int.
He was the lead designer at Freeman Fox for the 80m swing bridge in Kingston Upon Hull and coordinated the design and construction of the twin leaf bascule bridge over the Golden Horn in Istanbul.
He contributed to location studies, and design of buildings and telescope mountings for the Northern Hemisphere Observatory in La Palma, Canary Islands, including the 4.2m William Herschel telescope.
