Dr William Brown
Chartered Civil and Consulting Engineer and Designer
Dr William Brown OBE RDI, the suspension bridge designer and consulting engineer, had a 50-year career in the design and construction of very long span bridges of all types, including the two suspension bridges over the Bosphorus.
His innovative designs derived from improved and simpler ways of using and fabricating steel, resulting in elegant structures and cost savings. Intensive research into the dynamic and aerodynamic behaviour of suspension bridges set a new standard.
Dr Brown was Principal Designer at Freeman Fox & Partners from the 1960s onwards and partner responsible for creating design and directing construction from 1970-85. He was Partner-in-charge in Istanbul on the Bosphorus Bridge construction during 1972 and 1973.
The Turkish Government appointed him as the Engineer and Project Director for construction of the Second Bosphorus Bridge and National Motorway. In 1987 he founded Brown Beech & Associates, consulting engineers and bridge designers, and became lead designer for the proposed 3300m span bridge across Stretto di Messina, Italy.
