First Bosphorus Bridge 1973

Bridging Two Continents

On the European side at Ortaköy, the towers are sited on circular foundations 18m in diameter. Each tower leg is fixed on a separate pier 3m above sea level, which extends to solid bedrock 24m below.

On the Beylerbeyi side, the main foundations are rectangular in plan. The piers are sited close to the water’s edge with cofferdams protecting the excavation.

The only significant construction delay was due to unexpected ground conditions at the pier foundations, which prevented the scheduled start of the towers.

Further excavation was required so that the foundations could be keyed into sound rock. The tower pier foundations were completed in 1971 and the construction of the two steel towers began in June of that year.
