First Bosphorus Bridge 1973

Bridging Two Continents

The bridge deck is a flat, streamlined hollow box, which is superior in aerodynamic characteristics. This was based on the Freeman Fox designs from the Severn Bridge (UK), a new development that was awarded the MacRobert Award for Design Innovation.

The bridge had a main span of 1074m, flanked by unsuspended side spans of 231 and 255m. A 3-metre deep steel box deck resulted in a depth-to-span ratio of 1:358, giving it the thinnest proportions of any long-span suspension bridge built at that time.
